Duplicate Checks vs Single Checks: What's the Difference?
Ordering checks presents a small choice with a real consequence: single checks, or duplicate checks that keep a copy of everything you write. Here is what that choice actually means — and who still needs duplicates in an age of banking apps.
Create a payment receipt for a real sale — items, total, PAID stamp.
What duplicate checks are
Duplicate checks — also called carbon copy checks — have a thin copy sheet behind each check. When you write a check, the pressure transfers your writing onto the copy, which stays in the checkbook as a record. Single checks have no copy: once written and given away, you have no paper record of it (your bank statement shows the amount and payee, but not the memo or details you wrote).
Duplicate vs single: the real comparison
| Duplicate checks | Single checks | |
|---|---|---|
| Record keeping | Automatic paper copy of every check | None — rely on bank records |
| Cost | More expensive (extra paper) | Cheaper |
| Book size | Thicker (fewer checks per book) | Slimmer |
| Best for | Small business, landlords, anyone reconciling by hand | Personal use with digital banking |
Who still needs duplicates?
Small businesses and landlords who reconcile accounts by hand, people who write checks for tax-deductible expenses (the copy is your receipt), and anyone whose bank does not show check images online. If your bank app shows full check images and you rarely write checks, singles are fine — and cheaper.
The modern alternative
For most people, the duplicate check's job is now done better digitally: photograph every check before sending it, or use your bank's check-image feature. If you run a business, a proper record matters more: our Receipt Generator creates clean receipts for real transactions, and Invoice Generator handles the billing side.
Frequently asked questions
Are duplicate checks safer than single checks?
For record-keeping, yes — you keep a copy. For fraud prevention, no — the copy does not stop a check being altered; positive-pay services from your bank do that.
Do duplicate checks cost much more?
Typically 20–40% more per box than singles. For personal use, that is a few dollars a year; for a business writing hundreds of checks, it adds up.
Can I get duplicate checks from any bank?
Most banks and check printers offer both styles. If your bank does not, third-party check printers (which must meet banking security standards) do.
