How to Rank in Googles "People Also Ask" Boxes

"People also ask" boxes are the expandable question lists in search results — and winning one puts your answer in front of searchers even if you are not ranked #1. They are also genuinely useful: the questions in them are what real people ask next.

How PAA boxes work

Google generates PAA boxes dynamically: the questions shown depend on the query, and each answer is extracted from a page Google already ranks for related terms. You cannot "submit" to PAA — you win by ranking for the topic and answering the question better than the current holder. Clicking a question expands it and loads more related questions, so one good answer can surface a whole cluster.

Step 1 — Find the real questions

Search your main keyword and harvest the PAA questions shown, then click through several to expand the list (each expansion reveals new questions). Also mine: "People also ask" scrapers, forums (Reddit, Quora), and your own Search Console queries phrased as questions. Build a list of 10–30 genuine questions per topic — not questions you invented, questions people asked.

Step 2 — Answer directly, then expand

For each question, write a direct answer first — 40–60 words that answer the question completely, in the first paragraph under a heading that mirrors the question. Then expand with detail, examples and caveats. Google extracts the direct part for the box; readers stay for the expansion. Avoid burying the answer under three paragraphs of introduction — that is the most common reason good pages lose PAA spots.

Step 3 — Structure the page for extraction

Use the question as an H2 or H3, answer immediately below it, and keep answers self-contained (no "as mentioned above"). FAQ sections work well for this — note that FAQ rich results (the expandable stars in results) are restricted these days, but PAA extraction is a separate mechanism and still rewards clean Q&A structure. Add FAQ schema where appropriate with our Schema Markup Generator.

Step 4 — Track and defend

Search your target questions weekly and note which pages hold the boxes. PAA holders change often — a better answer displaces yours, and your better answer can displace others. Treat PAA as a bonus on top of solid rankings, not a strategy by itself: pages that rank well for the topic win PAA boxes; pages built only for PAA rarely rank at all.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to rank #1 to appear in People Also Ask?

No — PAA answers often come from pages ranked 3–10 for the topic. Relevance and answer quality matter more than position.

How long should a PAA answer be?

The extracted snippet is usually 40–60 words. Write the direct answer in that range, then expand below it for readers.

Can I track PAA rankings in a tool?

Some rank trackers (paid) track PAA ownership; manually searching your key questions weekly works fine for a small site.
