Use "3/4" for simple fractions and "1 1/2" (with a space) for mixed numbers. Whole numbers like "5" work too.
How it calculates
Addition and subtraction find a common denominator; multiplication multiplies straight across; division flips the second fraction and multiplies. Every answer is reduced to lowest terms with the greatest common divisor — so 2/4 + 1/4 comes back as "3/4", not "6/8".
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I type a mixed number?
Whole number, a space, then the fraction: "2 3/4". A negative mixed number is "-2 3/4".
Why simplify the answer?
Teachers and recipes expect lowest terms — 6/8 and 3/4 are the same value, but 3/4 is the standard way to write it.
