Reading a redirect chain
301 = permanent move (passes link equity — the right choice for migrations). 302/307 = temporary. 308 = permanent, like 301 but preserving the request method. A healthy chain has 0–1 hops; every extra hop adds latency and a small risk of the crawler giving up. Chains to hunt down: http→https→trailing-slash→www — three hops for one click — and redirect loops, which browsers abandon with an error. If your chain passes through another domain you do not control, that is worth a conversation with whoever set it up.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did tracing stop at 10 hops?
Long chains are almost always loops or misconfigurations; ten hops is evidence enough.
