How this checker works
Your text is checked by LanguageTool, the respected open-source proofreading engine, through its free public service. It goes far beyond spell-check: subject–verb agreement ("she don't"), wrong articles ("a apple"), confused words (their/there/they're), punctuation and common style problems are all flagged, with the reason and suggested replacements for each one. Red underlines are spelling, amber are grammar, blue are style suggestions.
Honest limits of the free service
The free checker is excellent for everyday writing — emails, essays, posts, applications — but it is a machine, not a human editor: it can miss subtle errors and occasionally flag a correct sentence, so read each suggestion before applying it. Texts are limited to 10,000 characters per check (split longer documents), and at very busy times the free service can ask you to wait a minute. For legal contracts or a thesis, a human proofread is still worth it after this pass.
Your privacy
Your browser sends the text directly to LanguageTool's checking service over a secure connection — Toolvium has no server in between and stores nothing. LanguageTool states it does not store texts sent to its public API. If your text is highly confidential, check it in smaller, less sensitive pieces.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Grammar Checker really free?
Yes. It runs on LanguageTool's free public service, so there is no account and no payment. The trade-off is the 10,000-character limit per check and occasional busy periods.
Does Toolvium save my text?
No. Your browser talks directly to the checking service; nothing passes through or is stored on our hosting.
Can it check British English?
Yes — choose English (UK) in the language list. US, Canadian and Australian English and auto-detection are also available.
Why did it flag a sentence I think is correct?
Checkers judge by the most common patterns and can misread unusual names, slang or deliberate style. Read the explanation card; if your sentence is intentional, ignore that suggestion.
