JPG full form and JPEG, plainly

JPG stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group — the committee that created the format. JPEG is the format's name; JPG is the same format with a three-letter extension, a leftover from old systems that limited extensions to three characters. A .jpg and a .jpeg file are the same thing, and renaming one to the other changes nothing.

What is JFIF?

JFIF (JPEG File Interchange Format) is the container standard that defines how JPEG image data is stored in a file — the headers, color information and structure. Almost every ".jpg" file you have ever used is technically a JFIF file. When software says "JFIF", it usually just means "a standard JPEG file" — nothing exotic.

HEIC: the newer format

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is Apple's default photo format since iOS 11. It stores the same quality at roughly half the file size of JPEG and supports features JPEG cannot (live photos, depth data, 16-bit color). The catch is compatibility: Windows, older Androids and many websites still cannot open HEIC without help. Our HEIC to JPG Converter converts HEIC to universally readable JPEG in your browser, and Image Converter handles the rest.

Which format should you use?

  • Sharing and web: JPEG — universal, small enough, good enough.
  • Storing iPhone photos: HEIC — half the space, same quality, as long as your tools support it.
  • Editing and archiving: PNG or TIFF for lossless quality (much larger files).
  • Modern web: WebP or AVIF — smaller than JPEG, but check browser support for your audience.

Frequently asked questions

Is JPG the same as JPEG?

Yes — identical format, different extension length. Rename freely; nothing changes inside the file.

Why does my iPhone save HEIC instead of JPG?

Because HEIC saves about half the storage at the same quality. You can switch to "Most Compatible" (JPEG) in Settings → Camera → Formats.

Can I convert HEIC to JPG without losing quality?

Conversion to JPEG is slightly lossy by nature, but at high quality settings the difference is invisible. Our converter keeps quality high by default.
