How it works
The tool loads a quantized DeOldify model (via ONNX Runtime Web) and runs it on your photo at 256×256 resolution, then upscales the colorized result back to your photo's original size. Everything happens locally — no server ever sees your image.
Honest limits
Colors are plausible, not historically accurate: the AI guesses colors from patterns it learned, so a dress that was red may come out blue. Fine detail softens because the model works at 256×256 and the result is upscaled. For best results, use clear, well-lit black & white photos; heavily damaged or very dark photos colorize less convincingly. If the model fails to load (slow connection, low memory), the tool says so instead of faking a result.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are the colors accurate to the original photo?
No — colorization is an educated guess. The AI has no way to know the true colors of a black & white photo; it predicts likely ones. Treat results as artistic, not documentary.
Why is the result softer than my original?
The model colorizes at 256×256 and the result is upscaled to your photo's size. For sharper output, run the result through the AI Image Upscaler afterwards.
Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No. The model file downloads to your browser once, and your photo is processed locally. Nothing is sent to any server.
Why does the first use take so long?
The ~64 MB model downloads once and is cached by your browser; later visits skip the download. The first inference on a phone can also take up to a minute.
